help to get started with new hardware
 

Hi all,
I'm new to Linux and I'm not sure how to get started.
My Windows 200 server died and I would like to set up a system that would be a very simple server to house back up drives.
I want to get a new computer for this purpose, but where can I find out what hardware, mother board, memory, etc will work with Linux.

The Linux HCL here on LQ is a pretty good place to check for hardware that's been tested by people. Take a look at the menu on the right side of the screen.

Otherwise you can check if the manufacturer supports linux. Many do these days, although getting some hardware to work is sometimes a pain. I ususally find a setup I like, and before buying check the LQ forums and the forums for the Distro I'm using to see if there are any issues with it.

There are a lot of handy places to research this kind of thing, but you won't always find all of the answers in one place.

What you do is have a look at what HW you would like given your other constraints... usually financial. Make sure you find a range. Then google the HW with "linux" in the search term as well.

Usually, anything "intel" over 3 months old will be well supported - but don't bother with on-board RAID unless you know for sure it's full hardware RAID. Don't mess with anything needing proprietary drivers.

Note: Linux servers usually don't use a monitor or a mouse or a keyboard. You set them up text only and access vio ssh. That would probably be the main difference you'll find right off the bat.
