Help setting up printer in KDE?

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to set up my printer in KDE and I'm not really sure how to do it I did go into the print manager and there was a place to add a printer but I'm not sure on the choices, I have a printer on my home network and Im not sure on the second choice screen which one mine would be, then if I choose one of the network printer options it asks me the printer address. I'm not sure what that is or where I can find out , I tried the scanning option but it still wants a printer address. Anyone that could tell me how to find out the address and the actual option I should be choosing?...Thanks a bunch! I did get the email setup but I think that was just a lucky guess and I still cant figure out how to get the kopete working, slowly but surely I am gonna learn it all, Oh I am on Suse 9.0 Have a great day

what kind of printer is it? and how is it connected to your computer?

Here is how I did it.

go to www.linuxprinting.org and look for your printer. In my case, I had to use cups. (I really like this printing system btw)

after installing cups, it can be configured at http://localhost:631/ Create a new printer, give it a nice name, and select the correct printer driver. Cups will configure files like /etc/printcap, and has an lpr interface for other unix programs.

Inside the kde printer manager, select CUPS as printer subsystem. You should see your printer, and make it the default printer.

hope this works..

Thanks for the replies , I have a HP Deskjet 5550 and it is connected to my other computer but we are on a small network running through a router, On this main computer I am running Windows XP and the configuration of the network on my other computer with Linux Suse 9.0 is just whatever automatic configuration it was givne during installation. Do I choose the SMB Network option for the printer setup? I am really new at all this so I dont know a lot about the really technical stuff. I will take a look at the other info that yapp supplied as well, Thanks again for the help. Glad to be a new part of the Linux World :)

Hi me again,
I got as far as the drivers on the list but I could get none of them to work, I did see my printer on the network and choose it on the screen right before the drivers, I looked at the linux printing site and couldnt make heads or tails out of it as I don't know one thing about using command line yet. And I'm really not sure how to use the command line stuff I see everywhere, Thanks again for the help

You say you are trying to access the printer over the network. Are you trying to access it from a linux box or a windows box? If a windows box you are going to need to configure samba. If a linux box I highly recommend you setup cups (it is very easy) to share the printer.

I am trying to access it from a Windows box , I am not sure how to set up samba I have seen a few things on here but wasnt sure wht is what, I am thinking I might need a book or something cause the installation manual only will take me so far, and I dont know anyone personally that works with Linux, but I am willing to learn so I guess that is the main thing :)Also I can see my network on the Linux computer but on my Windows computer I dont see the Linux computer. I did try to set up Samba/Windows config in Yast and I got the message:
Invalid queue name on the printer server, the printer server does not accept print jobs or the queue on the printer does not accept jobs.
return from the remote server
10.0.0.101 ( which is my network ) icmp_seq=1 hl=64 time=0.078ms

Connection to MSHOME failed

added interface ip=10.0.0.101bcast=10.0.0.255nmask=255.255.255.0

So sorry I have no idea what this means and not sure what to do next. Thanks for all the input :scratch:
