HELP! root pw lost and heavy disk problems

Okay, here comes my problem:

I've been running slackware on my server for a rather long time now and seemed to have no problem with it. But now I simply can't remember my password and even worse, everytime I try to enter the linux single mode, freaking fsck pops up, trying to fix my hard drive. But the automatic mode seems to fail and now I'd have to enter the root password (the one I lost) in order to fix the drive manually...

please help!

You may be able to use a bootable CD (either a Linux installation CD or a Live CD like Knoppix) to fsck and repair your hard drive without having to use a root password. See if there's a "rescue" option on your installation CD. After that, you should be able to boot into single-user mode without any problems.

thanks for the reply.

My server is going nuts though. It won't let me boot up from cd-rom (slackware 9.1 should be capable of booting from cd-rom, right?)
I checked the bios setup and everything should work just fine...

is there any other way?

Get the bootdisk and rootdisk for slackware. bare.i and color.gz or whatever they are now. Boot to those and then you should be able to fsck your /dev/hda1 partition or wherever you have linux installed.
