Help :: Red Hat installation errors

Hello reader,
I am brand new to linux, so i will try and explain my problem as well as i can. Here goes.....

I have just finnished downloading the 3 disk images for Red Hat linux 7.3 and have burnt them to disk. My computer (currently running windows 98SE) finds the cdrom on boot and starts the application i press enter as it says and it starts doing the installation. It gets round to starting the graphical interface and it fails to load it and it falls back to text mode with the following error

Quote:
GUI installer startup failed, falling back to text mode.

Trace back (innermast last):
File "/usr/bin/anaconda" line 503 in ? from text import Install Interface
File "/usr/lib/anaconda/text.py" line 28, in ? from language import expandLangs
install exited abnormally
As i said above im currently running a win98 SE system with
400MHz CPU
64MB RAM
20MB Hard disk running as primary master
10MB HD running as primary slave
16X12X40 cd-rw (running as secondary master)
52X CD-ROM (running as secondary slave)
Trident 950 - 4MB graphics card
Daewoo 518X Monitor

I think thats mostly it. Thanks for helping me in advance, i really apreciate all the help i get

Jamie

on the first boot screen run the media check. It will prompt you to put in the disks one at a time and test them.

if that's ok then go ahead and try the install in text mode, and try switching to the other terminals using alt-F5, alt-F4, etc... and see what kind of errors your getting.

Just tried text mode. It comes up with a similar error (if not identical) after the program called anaconda is attempted to be loaded. I dont have a clue why its doing this. I downloaded the .iso image directly from the uk mirror and burnt it straight away. :S can anybody help me?

Thanks

I found the reason why i think installation wont work:

Quote:
The SGI XFS installer for RedHat 7.3 will not work with the current RedHat iso's. This is because, as some of you know, RedHat changed their iso's after the release of 7.3.
I wish i knew this before i downloaded the image files. Im now going to download Red Hat 8.0 hopefully it will work. Anyhow, does anybody know any http sites you can download Red Hat from. As i cant use my schools 2mb vpn line for ftp sites, but if anybody knows of a http site, it will be a great help.

Thanks a lot
Jamie

I did not know you had that. It's not made by redhat and has little support. I would just go with the official release.
