Question Help! Problem with CD/DVD drives.

Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit), AMD Athlon 64 CPU, 160 GB HDD. HP DVD1040 burner.

Just recently I have started having trouble burning DVD's. The unit doesn't, or has difficulty reading the disc's (Maxell Gold DVD-R). I have used these disc's in the past without problems, but now things have gotten so bad that I am wasting disc's to the point that I have decided something is not quite right. I tried burning the disc's on another machine without failure, so eliminating the possibility that the disc's are bad. Is there a command that I could type in the terminal that would reset the DVD burner. I have already tried sudo apt-get install regionset and it didn't help? I also tries cleaning the unit with a Philips DVD lens cleaner disc ... that didn't help either.
Is there a way of checking if the unit is kaput ... if so. I will buy a new one ... any recommendations of make and model would be appreciated keeping in mind I am not a millionaire.

Thanks, Gael.

Mine's an LG GSA-4040B --- bought it off eBay a couple of years back for under fifteen quid (even cheaper now). Been brilliant.

Like video cards, we have to make sure the correct drivers are available. For DVDs, it may be the same. Check the DVD manufactor to see if they have a linux type driver you may need to install.

If the DVD manufactor does not have the linux drivers, you may have to look for a DVD that is linux complaint.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Unfortunately the unit is discontinued so I will have to look elsewhere. Thanks all the same

Gael.

I have had this same machine running Linux Ubuntu for about 2 years without any problems at all. I think if it was a driver problem I would have known about it earlier. Having said that, I'll check the relevant site.

Thanks for the suggestion

Gael.
