Help! Problem with CD/DVD drives.
Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit), AMD Athlon 64 CPU, 160 GB HDD. HP DVD1040 burner.
Just recently I have started having trouble burning DVD's. The unit doesn't, or has difficulty reading the disc's (Maxell Gold DVD-R). I have used these disc's in the past without problems, but now things have gotten so bad that I am wasting disc's to the point that I have decided something is not quite right. I tried burning the disc's on another machine without failure, so eliminating the possibility that the disc's are bad. Is there a command that I could type in the terminal that would reset the DVD burner. I have already tried sudo apt-get install regionset and it didn't help? I also tries cleaning the unit with a Philips DVD lens cleaner disc ... that didn't help either.
Is there a way of checking if the unit is kaput ... if so. I will buy a new one ... any recommendations of make and model would be appreciated keeping in mind I am not a millionaire.
