help please with sendmail, pop3, outlook 2002 and iptables

Help!!

i am using red hat 8.0 with sendmail

i have enabled pop3 on the server.

However, when i try to access the mail that is on the server from a windows 2000 workstation on the lan, i cannot log onto the pop3 server. Everything else works just fine. It seems to fail on
username and password. I have checked this numerous times and it does not seem to be the problem.

I am trying to host my own mail server and i can send and receive mail freely on the server from the internet.

I have an adsl router configured to accept port 25. I have configured iptables to accept port 25 and port 110 and port 80 for web hosting. I can telnet to the servername 110.

What could it be? I am running out of ideas.

My iptables has the following lines in it:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 110 -j ACCEPT

My mail log says "Did not issue mail/expn/vrfy/etrn during connection to MTA" What does this mean?

What should be in my hosts file? I have got the following:

127.0.0.1 myservername.com mydomain.com

thanks again

forgot to mention that the linux server is not directly attached to the router. It is plugged into the switch on the lan.

thanks

Please don't post the same question in more than one location. It just results in people answering the same question twice, or answering when you've already resolved the problem in the other thread.
