Help Please
Hello everyone I am a newbie. I have Ubuntu and I have been unable to get my HP LaserJet 3700dn to work.
I have installed the hplip with no success. My HP DeskJet and Photosmart work okay, except for printing crooked which has nothing to do with Ubuntu. My biggest concern is the laserjet, it does not print at all. I get messages that my laserjet is busy (it is not) and it is not communicating possibly because it is not connected (it is). 1)I have un-installed and reinstalled with no success. 2)I have Googled everything I can think of to help me with this but found nothing that will work for me. 3)I have tried different USB cables but that didn't work. 4)I have even tried an Ethernet cable but that didn't work. 5)I know my printer is compatible with Linux which is why I downloaded the hplip. 6)I have, gone to System > Administration > Printing and then to global settings > detect LAN printers. I have double clicked on the HP LaserJet 3700, and tried to print a test page. This is when I get the messages. I also get the messages when I am trying to print anything, doesn't matter. Can anyone help? This printer is vital to my business and I really do not want to reinstall Windows in order to have use of this printer. I also have an HP LaserJet 1300 which I have not installed yet and I am just praying that one is going to work. But should anyone have advice on that one as well, I would be happy to hear from you. Sorry, I can't help with your problem except guesssing that the device for the printer is not correctly selected,
BUT Edit this thread (or create a new one if not possible and use a sensible topic, such as "Printer HP LaserJet 3700dn not working/not connected in Ubuntu". Normally, threads called "help me" or such will simply be ignored by others, as they want to see if they can help without having to read the thread. There will be much more answers this way... |

If I try to set up a dummy queue in the cups browser tool (above), there are drivers for (color) LaserJet 3700 and 3700n. One of those should work.
Using the cups browser tool, if the printer appears on the menu, then it **should** work. If not, check the HP website for a driver. |
Thank you both so much. I went to the localhost:631 and my printer shows up and still does not work but I installed from there and it is still not working. Same old message, may not be connected. I do not know what my problem is but it leaves me no choice except to dual boot with xp and ubuntu. I have to have this printer working and I have been trying for over a month.

I'd suggest that you bump up the verbosity level for
logging a notch and look for lines that start with an 'e' or 'E' once you've done that and restarted CUPS. It's not possible to help w/o information. As for the cabling (namely the ethernet) - is the printer set-up to use a static IP, is it in the same IP range as your PC, and how are they interfaced? Via a switch, via a cross-over cable? Each action I write of might help you isolate problem. Or it could be the first you took to isolate problem.
Have you tried booting live ubuntu CD, then connecting printer? Have you booted the latest Ubuntu 9.04 live CD for a printer test? If live CD gets printing, all your hardware is good and your installed OS is problem. My new install of Ubu 9 did not find printer for several boots. When cable was connected to running computer, then printer auto install happened. Does this printer have an Ethernet port? Eric I tried lsUSB in a terminal window and it is funny but the LaserJet is showing but my DeskJet 9800 is not. I can print from the 9800 without problem but I do not see it in the list. My Photosmart 6280 is also in the list and it works without any problem.

Sadly nothing has worked. However I am tired after trying for a month so I took the lazy way and partitioned my computer last night so I can dual boot. If you tried all we wrote, did it print test page? Did it print on other computer? Did it print on same computer when booted on live CD?
Each test was to tell you what might be problem, not to cure problem. Without considering why one test would succeed & other test fail, you are not getting closer to fixing problem. Partitioning computer drive to allow installation of Linux GNU as second OS might be helpful. Installing Windiz in new partition is not helpful but does add opportunity to have malwares & Windiz ruining your Linux partition. |
In case it's a driver problem, I've had success in the past (Windows and Linux) using the Apple Laserwriter Plus driver for HP laser printers. It's an old driver, from back in the days when HP Laserjet II/III printers had compatibility cartridges, but it seems to still work for newer printers. I've even seen color printed with the Apple driver.

For instance I found a website to download the APPLE LASERWRITER PLUS driver that Slowcoder told me about and I haven't gotten my confirmation email yet. Usually that only takes a little while but I have been waiting about 15 minutes. I think I will look elsewhere or try again to get my confirmation email. And I have retried the Ethernet to print from my sons' computer w/o success and getting same message, "Printer may not be connected". And I am looking for the IP info that Tinkster asked for etc. Thank you guys for pushing me. I really do not want to dual boot to Windows. I just got lazy and frustrated. |

Cheers, Tink I do not how to set let alone bump up the verbosity level for logging. I do however have a rather lengthy report from my 3700 after troubleshooting from the printer configuration. The report says it has 10 pages and I do not see any 'e' or 'E' in that report. I do not know how to get that report in CUPS but this report talks about CUPS. This is an Ethernet cable hooked from my printer to a D-Link 5-port 10/100 desktop switch. My son's computer is also hooked to the desktop switch (he is in another room in my house). I went to his computer and added my printers in order to network them and I have failed miserably because I tried printing from my son's computer to the 3700 and the 6280 and it did not work. You get the same message for both printers on his computer, “Printer may not be connected”. I know nothing about networking I thought I could just add my printers to his computer and it would work. Obviously not. We did not set up a static IP and I do not know if they are interfaced. I do have a Ethernet Interface IP address and a Loopback Interface IP address. As far as my IP address for the server we share the same one because he piggybacks on mine. Does this tell you anything? If you tried all we wrote, did it print test page? The website I thought I could download it from sent me to HP website and HP sent me to the Linux website to download the hplip. Not helpful since I already did that. I have been to several websites but most want me to download drivers detective and I don't want to download that just the driver. The 6280 printer is now printing from my son's computer but the 3700 gave me the message "Device communication error".

My computer died. I was told to shut down take out my hard drive and boot up from Live CD. My computer would not boot up from Live CD so we put the hard drive back in and it is no longer being recognized.
My computer was pretty old. I think I purchased it in 2003 or 2004. Anyway I am building a new one but my parts will not be here until next Thursday. It was probably my stupid Dell hardware all along not allowing me to use my printer. Hopefully a new computer will help. I hope so. So until my new computer is built I will not know. I will however let everyone know if my printer works afterwards. I would like for this to be resolved if anyone should have the same problem in the future with their printer. Thanks guys. |
When you rebuild, add your user to the lp group. Newer versions of hplip require users to be a member of that group.
