Help Opening Multiple Files
 

I want to open multiple files at once and have them open in different instances of the program.

I tried to use Ctrl + A, then right click and picked "Image Viewer" (they are photos) and it only opens the program in on instance and you have to use the arrow key to go to the next pic and thats not what I need to do.

I've seen people do what I need in order to try and stress there system to show how much it can handle. Like they will run 20-40 movies at once.

That's pretty easy to do if you are running kde. Select the files you want open in konqueror right click on one of them and go to "Open With" in the drop down menu and select the app you want to use to open the files. Each file will open in a separate instance of the app you selected. Don't know if that's possible in gnome; from the description of your problem, I would guess not.

What you said is exactly the action I normally take. I'm using Gnome.
Maybe there is another file manager I can download so I can have the same effect that you get.

Can I install one that KDE uses and roll with that or do you think it would crash my box.

I know there are ways to install kde on a standard ubuntu system which is strictly gnome based, or at least there used to be. Once installed you have the option in your login window to go into kde or gnome. Here's a link describing the process in detail:

Note some of the problems and issues you can run into mentioned in the article.

In general, you can run kde apps in gnome and gnome apps in kde; you just have to have all the necessary libraries and dependencies installed. If you install through apt/synaptic that would be done automatically. For example, I know the kde cd burning app, k3b, is available in ubuntu and commonly installed and used in the gnome based environment of ubuntu. If you go through the above kde install and boot into gnome, you should be able to run the kde file browser, konqueror, within gnome and it should behave like I described in my prior post. However, only the kde apps would be listed in the menus for opening your multiple files.
