Help! Only "Login" screen on startup

My Mandrake Linux 9.2 will not startup. It shows the little white bar to show how much it has loaded, but then it goes straight to what I think is text mode. It asks me for my login and password, but then it does nothing. It only tells me the last time I went on. The only thing I can do is press escape, but then it gives me an incredibly long list of directories. What can I do so I can startup?
