Help on kernel 2.4.4 upgrade

Hellow all,
I wanted to install linux 2.4.4 kernel on Knoppix 3.6 system. after compilation bzImage was generated and it had no errors. But in editing the lilo.conf i have a problem.
because it has no initrd.img file to link so at booting " kernel panic " message comes and say no intrd to starts.
pls give me some comments on this.

Why would you what to upgrade to 2.4.4 kernel...?
What kernel are you running at the moment...?

Im not going to upgrade is, i want to install rtlinux 3.1, for that they recommend linux 2.4.4 kernel.

As far as I know 2.4.4 kernel is not a stable version.

My objective is not to do any other work on that kernel but to run rtlinux on it. luckily i was able to compile it on redhat 8.0 but i wanted to install it on knoppix.
