Hi guys, please excuse my question if it sounds silly.

Anyway i was wondering if it was possible to alter a daemon's title during start up. Btw i'm on XLinux, hope that'll shed some light on my topic.

no.. doesnt sound silly... bit strange, yeah.
a daemon is a process, usually for benefit of u (gpm: mouse daemon) or users (samba, httpd, sshd) that is started most of the time after ure box has booted. Theyre usually started without intervention and run in the background, menaing u usually dont (have to) interact with em.
I think ure confusing something that runs in a window with a daemon. a window title can be changed, tho i dont have the escape codes at hand.

Thanks for replying man.

Okay i think i may have confused some things here and there. But anyway allow me to rephrase my question in detail :)

What I meant to ask was is there a way to alter a daemon's name during boot up, just this part for example:

samba ........................... [OK]

So in other words would it be possible to change samba into something like "MYSamba"?

Some guy in irc told me to edit the binary, he didn't elaborate further so what's that supposed to mean?

unSpawn 05-28-2001 06:40 AM

Ah. A tweaker walks amongst us.. :-]
LOL! Edit the binary... whadda goof.
Normally when u compile ure own stuff there are ways to change its banners & name (print stuff). What ure referring to is a startup script. Thats easy.
Look in /etc/rc.d. There should be a directory with scripts called /etc/rc.d/init.d or so.
Is there a script called "samba", then open it.

now go down to where it says "case" and look up the part where it sez "start". post that part here and we'll see if we can change it on-line.

(Btw, dont post the same question to other forums, its called crossposting & considered lack of netiquette)

Allrighty! Finally got my question answered :) So it's all in the start up script! Thanks for the help unspawn u da man!

I'll post the script here as soon as I get my box working, having some hardware problems with it at the moment. Damn CPU seem to be the problem as there were no beeps during post. Now that's bad :P

Pardon my lack of netiquette, it won't happen again :)
