I'd suggest that initially, you might try to get a copy of 6.10 (known as Edgy). It may just solve your problem - what with newer/better/greater/more up to date hardware detection. You may also just be able to look into changing all your repositories in the /etc/apt/sources.list file and run the updates.
ALSA is probably what you need to be looking at to get the sound working - erm it may also be relevant as to which desktop environment you're running as advice might be "tool" specific i.e. Ubuntu normally uses gnome as it's default desktop, though it's no difficulty to install KDE instead (which is my personal choice). You might look at the Ubuntu (or debian if LQ doesn't have specifically Ubuntu) distro forum. Or you can also google for Ubuntu forums - they have lots of distro specific info - erm I think that 5.10 was called "Hoary" Sorry can't be of more help (oh, and I think that you'd be needing snd-emu10k for the driver for your sound card - mines similar). regards John |
Have you try checking the mixer settings. Some distros
have the sound off by default. When I install slackware 11.0, the sound was disable. I ran kmix, kmix is a sound mixer. I was right the sound was off, I click on the green LED to turn on master volume, pcm and line and then move the slider up. And sound was heard. If no success here, the next thing to try is alsamixer. Enable each source and move slider up and test for sound. Hope this works for you. |
i have the alsamixer and i seen that last night.
the alsamixer has all the sound bars i have 7.1 surround sound card but use 5.1 speakers how do i turn on the sound?? and i used the package finder and got all the alsa stuff... still no luck.... lol im just lost. |
when i do the kmix and goto switches all of them are red and the SPDIF is yellow?

I notice from your first post that your soundcard is a
sound blaster live 24. There is a module for the sound blaster live, but not with the 24 bit. You could try the original sound blaster live module. As root type modprobe emu10k1 If you get no errors, run lsmod to see if it was loaded, and repeat the mixer settings again. |
ohh so it would probley be best just to use my onboard sound card. then.. lol well anyways im thinking of going back to windows being i lost my disk and thats why i am running linux dont quit understand all of this lol to much like php programming to me..

Sorry, it did not work out. I did a google search. It seems like you are not the only one having problems with this particular soundcard in linux. All linux distros
are not equal. Some have extensive hardware support and others to not. There is a linux distro that supports your soundcard. It's called xandros. I checked the HCL (ie. Hardware compatibility list ) the website is: http://support.xandros.com/hclv4/ Click on sound cards. Scroll down and you will see your soundcard with a check mark. Xandros is not free. What you are buying is ease of use and support. I remembered a quote. Someone ask which operating system is best Windows, Mac or linux? The reply was: Use what works for you. |
Well, seeing that the other post where i replied was closed, i'll post my message here again!
Seeing the information from alsa-project.org cardname: Sound Blaster Live 24bit chipset: SB0410 P17 Drivers: (ca0106) Notes: [ANio] [MIDIio] (4) It should work with alsa, so try installing or if you allready have it installed, update it. And try to see if the ca0106 module has been loaded @ all. try: lsmod | grep ca0106 if it hasn't been loaded yet, load it. |
yeah went windows thanks all
