Help needed with windows xp ntfs transfer to linux partition single hard drive
 

ok, so i am new to linux, but thank god i have a dual boot. yesterday, i changed my xp accounts password, and today, i forgot what it was! i cannot remember at all. so i am going to redo my xp or maybe upgrade to vista. BUT, i need all the files from xp. so i was wondering how to transfer my files from xp in ntfs to my linux partition. alot of music and game files. around 120 gigs worth. so i dont really wanna lose it. please give me some advice on how to transfer those files. THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR HELP

like are you using ubuntu, openSuSE, mandriva etc.

i am using ubuntu.

then you should be able to read the ntfs drive
you can just copy the files with the file manager from your windows xp drive to ubuntu

hmmm i dont see them. both of my operating systems are on one hard drive. and i cant see my windows partition!

Have you tried to login using the admin account via safe mode? Another option is using the linux ophrack live cd. You can find it on sourceforge...

no havent... or i dont know actually. i have one account. how do you login as admin? and also, shouldn't ubuntu be able to see the partition in the "computer" like next to the file system?

it should be able to see it in Computer, trying mounting it manually
sudo fdisk -l(look for the name of your windows drive)
sudo mkdir /mnt/windows
sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/(put the name of the windows drive here) /mnt/windows
you should at least be able to mount it read-only
