help needed to send e mails
 

Hi, I am new to my small computer. It is a CnMBook .I have got this as i do boating but need to be able to collect my emails and send some back.
I have got the dongle to work finally after the good advice given on here, so i tried to receive my emails which i did ( My Emails are with Hotmail)When i tried to send e mails back i could put in the address and subject ,and then i try to type my message nothing happens.It seems to be trying to down load something but does not manage to do this ,and i waited a long time but nothing. I pressed the send buttn and the mail went but no message on it.
What am i doing wrong?
Also am i able to get MSN on it as to be able to talk to my friends would also be useful to me if i am on my own.
I am able to browse the web no problem.

which distrbution?
which email client are you using?
Did you create a profile?
Did you setup the correct smtp server?

yes i checked my smtp server is correct.
I have not done a profile where do i do that?

I have looked at pidgin and i have followed all the instructions and opened an account as i am told to, but i cant seem to get msn .
It is telling me to put in a password for my contact .when i put a password in i get the message connection error from notifiation server.Un able to connect.

Sorry i just dont seem to be able to work linux other than to browse the web.

which mail client are you using?
So you can't type the message body?
But you can sent the message?


If you just opened the account, perhaps it takes some time, before you can login.
Any firewall?
if yes try to disable the firewall.

I have been trying to do this most of the day, i can now see where i write the messages,on pidgin but nothing goes. I have got my settings the same as yours.this is what i get each time

Un able to authenticate unable to connect
Pidgin will not attempt to reconnect the account until you correct the error and re-enable the account
I am also getting this in red writing

Connection error from notification server .


Some of my contacts are hotmail .com. others are hotmail.co.uk


As for my emails i cannot get it to even go now.
When i am at home i am using
orangehome.co.uk when i am on the boat i use a voda phone dongle .I have tried with both and i get this message

ERROR
Error occurred while sending message 554 Please check that your outgoing mail server settings are correct. Contact your service providers technical support for assistance.


Well i have checked that i have pop.orangehome .co.uk is correct and it is. As for my service provider i dont know who it is only that i use MSN
windows live hotmail. I am at the moment looking at the configeration,and checking all that too.

You need to use the SMTP server from the provider you use to connect, in order to sent mail.
something like
smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Check with your provider


Either you use the wrong login and pass, or you are connected to the wrong authentication server.

Well here i am again you must think i am stupid,
I am about to give up on this i could throw the computer at the wall.
I am sure i have the settings right, for pidgin ,as for password i only use one so must be right on that.But now tells me msn is locked till i put what is wrong right.


E mails well i can pick up all my mail from hotmail (windows live hotmail) but i still cant answer them it wont let me type in the message box on reply ( it appears to be trying to connect to something)
If i try to write a new email it lets me write in the box but wont send.

I am wondering if the two problems are connected as it is all windows live ( be it messenger or hotmail)


Although at the moment i am trying to sort this out at home ,i want this facility to work on my voda phone dongle when i am away on the boat i still do not know what smtp to type in for that .I have looked on the web site but find nothing. Do you know whether mobile devices have smtp addresses.


Sorry i really am trying hard with this.But seem to be going round in circles.

I use Hotmail.

Why don't you use a regular mail client like evolution or kmail to sent mails?

Orange probably is your xDSL Internet provider. Vodafone is your mobile GPRS/EDGE/HSCSD Internet provider. All have their own network settings and that may even be different depending on if you're a prepaid customer or not. Only Vodafone site or support will tell. Using one providers SMTP while you're on the others network should not be expected to work, unless it runs open relays.

But since Hotmail is purely webbased, and you already having a network connection over your phone, the "won't let me type" thing could be a browser issue: Mcrsft appears to have had some issues getting the site to accept non-Mcrsft browsers. Also because Hotmail is purely webbased sending email should not be a problem because it's composed and sent remotely, not from your system. POP3 seems to be enabled for all users so there's another chance, but from what I've read you need a "connector" and I doubt it's a) free and b) GNU/Linux compatible but searching might reveal more.

Long story short I would suggest you disable any filtering for the site (local settings or proxy-based), then try different browsers and different user agent (MsIE) settings. Maybe you'll find a combination that'll work. Also, for comparison, try setting up a Gmail account and and using it (in basic HTML mode?). If that works you at least have working, webbased email at your disposal. It may not be what you are looking for but Gmail does not only support POP3 but also IMAP(S), which is a) way more efficient protocol and b) syns flawlessly with clients like Thunderbird (or LookOut).

If you do use Hotmail via Firefox, you may want to try the IETab add-on as well.

Well i thought i would update you all. Thanks for your help I have opened a new e mail address using my dongle and the CmNBook .I have opened it in Google mail .com .I have had no problem at all it worked straight away.
I used to little computer at the weekend with no problems ,i just now have to tell people i have a new address when i am away. But then i can still see my hotmail just not use it to send emails. Anyway i am happy.
I have now to try and see if i can get the chat to work on google with pidgin.I think that might take me a while.As i dont really know what to do .

Try to use opera, or another browser, to use windows live mail
