Help needed starting GUI in slackware 12.2 on sun virtual box

I can't find anything on the internet about this, it's kind of strange. Anyway I'm using Sun Virtual Box and I have slackware 12.2 installed. I loaded it up and it just went into a Command Line interface but I can't get a GUI. I typed startx and it says startx isn't found. How do I get my GUI interface?

maybe try init 5 ?

edit:

or maybe /usr/bin/startx cause it might not be in your path?
so do
which startx
then try to run it from the directory.
Also you are logged in as root right?

Same as you would on real hardware. Is this a new installation? Did you install all the packages? If not, is the package with startx installed? On Slackware 13.0 you can find out which package(s) it is in and whether they are installed by
Code:
slackpkg search startx

Yes, it's a new installation I installed every package that was already selected during setup except games. I'm not sure what package startx is in. If it isn't installed how would I go about doing so?

Yeah it didn't give me any results. Can someone just tell me how I would go about installing the package which contains it? It's clear I don't have it currently.

It's runlevel 4 for a GUI on Slackware. Try editing /etc/inittab:
Code:
nano /etc/inittab
Change the 3 to 4 in this line:
Code:
id:3:initdefault:
Then reboot:
Code:
telinit 6

I did what you said and now it says "Hey, you don't have KDM GDM or XGM. Can't use runlevel 4 without one of those installed.".

I'm not trying to be spoonfed here but I'm very new to slackware, I usually use much less advanced linux systems. I also noticed before that apt-get isn't installed on here. So I really don't know how to install anything and can't find much on the internet so could someone tell me how to do that? And how do I even get a shell prompt at this point? It won't even let me boot up now. Can I change the runlevel back?

Not sure if this will help, but have you installed the Guest Additions (from the VirtualBox menu)? Other than that, the only thing I can suggest is something went wrong and you didn't get a full install.
No, Slackware doesn't use apt-get. Pre-built packages are installed/upgraded/removed by using installpkg/upgradepkg/removepkg.

First : Please read the documentation.

To do startx, the packages "slackware/x/*
from disk 2 ( or the DVD ) must be installed.

And preferably a window manager ( Desktop)
from disk 2 "slackware/xap/" e.g. xfce.

The KDE Desktop is on disk 3, "slackware/kde/*
.....
