Help me choose a distro

I know this has been said many times but i just want to know a distro based on this. I want full control over the system kinda like debian and slackware. But i want nice gui's and bootsplashes and all like suse. I just dont want to buy them and i prefer to use the e100 module for my nic so if its an ftp install it must have it working. I prefer a system with less dependency hell. Slackware with swaret or debian with apt is awsome so if its something that works like that then good.. I do not care what kind of package mangement it has (tgz, deb) as long as its not source based.

i am not sure what your trying to say as you take praise in slackware and debian throughout your post, so why not use one or the other (or both) ? i personally recommend
slackware, but i mean like you said, this question is asked many many times, well too
many times actually, so the best advice to be given is to download distros and play with
them and you decide.. its the best way to choose ... and also read the review section
on the distros as you may get a better idea which to start with, and maybe some that
aren't worth touching ...

What im trying to say is i want a distro like slackware and debian that gives me total control but also with gui and bootsplash like suse and a nice control center like suse's yast.

vectordrake 05-17-2004 05:22 PM

You're describing Mandrake. And, you can admin your box with Mandrake Control Center - works well (of course any distro can be administered with a GUI if you install webmin...)

Well look i just like the look of suse im not a real new just didnt know where to post this.. I know some stuff on slack and some on debian but i like a better gui.. Like added features to kde and stuff..

HadesThunder 05-17-2004 05:42 PM

Mandrake

peacebwitchu 05-17-2004 05:46 PM

Go with debian or slackware and add your own frills.

iotc247 05-17-2004 06:17 PM

Yeah look if i was that good id make my own distro and i hate mandrake... Well i guess ill just do a special dvd method of downloading suse.

HadesThunder 05-18-2004 01:23 PM

What do you hate about Mandrake?

Rylinkus 05-18-2004 01:29 PM

What exactly is Slackware missing that Suse or others have? I guess I don't really see what you could possibly need in Debian or Slack that you can't simply add yourself.

vectordrake 05-18-2004 03:36 PM

The screenshots of Suse show KDE at some of its finest moments (although, I think Mandy 10 got it right, IMO). Since Suse is the main contributer to KDE (financially, and correct me if I'm wrong, hosting too?), they have close contact with the project. It makes for a nice look.Yes, you can do it yourself too, but its nice to have it done for you already. Hate Mandrake? That's his choice, although hate is a strong term. Every distro does something right, but many do have a weakness. That's why I have tried every one that I can get my hands on. To each his own

Well if someone is looking to make a distro or would make me one but all credits go to you i just be like the project helper i would be happy.. It would have the flexibiliyty of slack. Program database like debian. Control of slack and deb together. But graphics like mandrake and suse.. That would be the perfect distro.

student04 05-18-2004 06:18 PM

i agree with those that suggested mandrake (not that i'm saying the others are bad.. i just prefer mandrake). It gives you great control.. and i love it's control center and everything else that it has gui's for (harddrake, etc). Even though suse appears to look better as vectordrake said, all i can say to that is: make it look the way you want it to! I downloaded themes, icons, screensavers, AND splash screens (:-D). They all look really cool... (mostly from www.kde-look.org).

just my thoughts..

HadesThunder 05-22-2004 05:46 PM

Did you not hear him? He says he hates Mandrake and failed to give a reason for it.

student04 05-22-2004 06:09 PM

The descriptions in the first and second posts fit mandrake, and if iotc247doesn't like mandrake, then he/she can find no solution here. It is contradictory (BUT there probably are other distros like mandrake, with the same overall stuff...). I cannot be wrong in *suggesting* mandrake, as others here have also.

iotc247: why not download a few distributions and try them out for yourself, and figure out that way which you like best. I did this for fedora, mandrake, redhat and knoppix. I happen to like mandrake the best (but fedora is also catching on) because of the reasons in your first and second posts.

What is your reason for disliking Mandrake Linux (HadesThunder already asked)?
