Question Help! Linux memory problem

Hello,

I've just installed RHL 8 into an IBM xSeries 225 machine
using the default installation. I am able to install it. The
problem is, whenever I use commands to write data into
the harddisk or tape drive, I can see that the memory
utilization increases proportional to the size of the data.
That is, if I tar or cp a file the size of 1GB, the memory
usage will increase by 1GB! And, the memory usage
remained even after the tar or cp process is over.
It seems to me that the data is some how stored
into the memory as well as on the harddisk. And,
I couldn't find any way to free the memory.

I've tried to install it on another system, but the
result is the same.

Please help.

Regards,
WK

why do you percieve this to be a problem? if you'd search this site or others like it, you'd already know that this is completely normal, and a very good thing.

Hello Chris,

My problem is, suppose I tar a 4GB data into my tape. It will
take up all my memory and swap space. And, after
a while the server hangs. It it's a good thing, it should
hang my system, right? (Unless the system hang doesn't
have anything to do with the problem I mentioned)

Can you point me to any info regarding the problem? I've
searched the site but couldn't find much info.

Hope you could help me on this one.

Regards,
WK
