Help installing wireless usb adaptor for mandrake 10.0
 

:scratch: Ok here is my situation. I have just dual-booted my computer with Mandrake10.0 and Winblows ME. I have been using my mn-710 wireless usb adaptor for a while now in windows. It does not work in mandrake though. When I installed mandrake it said that my connection was using the ethernet port 0(something something-8139)Which is a ethernet adaptor(duh) and not my mn-710 usb adaptor. I've tried to install it many times using drakconnect(i think it was) in the mandrake control center. I've tried every option and nothing about mn-710 came up. What am I supposed to be doing? The mandrake manual was of no help, and i've only been using linux for about three days and have no clue what to do.

Ok maybe im an idiot, I don't think so but that manual made no sense, :study: Can someone tell me what to type in the terminal or what program to run, Im thinking all I have to do is take the drivers off the cd and put them somewhere(drakconnect doesn't allow you to look for additionial drivers).
So how do I take them off of the cd and make them come up in the driver selection window in drake connect?

1) Is the adapter a USB device?
2) Did you check the manufacturers website for appropriate drivers? If no, try that or post the manufacturer one of us can help you in locating the appropriate drivers. If yes, when you tried installing them what errors did you get.
3) What kernel version? You get this by typing 'uname -r' (without the quotes) at a command prompt.

1) Yes it is a usb device

2) Yes I have the drivers(microsoft)Which are on the CD.

The Problem I am having is how do I install the drivers?
I have no clue, but a step by step procedure would be nice.

3) The kernal is 2.6.3 -7mdk

My question is so simple it's stupid.:confused:

ok I suppose you dont have the drivers for linux. visit www.linuxant.com. the first thing you shoud do is to download the latest mandrake linux kernel "kernel-2.6.3.14mdk-1-1mdk.i586" at http://www2.linuxforum.net/RPM/Mandrakelinux.html then you download the driverloader from linuxant. the rest should be very simple. just follow the instruction. read the faqs and installation.

OK olubone I Found The kernal source and I installed the driver loader.
But once I ran driverloader in the terminal it didn't find any devices
What am I supposed to do now?
Like I said before I am using A microsoft mn-710 USB Adaptor

Do I have to install the drivers for it Before I run dldrconfig?
If so, how do I do it?
And as was suspected The Microsoft website does not support linux and so does not provide drivers for it. Anyone know where I can find them?

www.linuxant.com's driverloader does not support USB adapters. Sorry to tell you that. I am running a Microsoft MN-510 and I am having some problems. First thing you have to figure out is what system your card uses. After checking out the linux-wlan list of USB adapters it seems your card isn't on the list. This does not mean that the card does not work on Linux it just means you are going to have to find out what chip the card uses. Ok the drivers that came with the card are useless on Linux. What you need is the drivers for the chip your card uses(ie the MN-510 uses the prism2 chips and there are also the Atmel chips for other cards). The best thing you can do now is try to figure out which chip your card uses. Google seems to think it uses the Prism drivers(Some thread from this forum came up). If I were you I would call Microsoft and ask them what chip the card uses(tell them you are trying to get it to work on Linux). Thats all I can tell you now. If you find this information you can then find the driver you need.

Qzar baron and rest, if mfg,s willing to support linux that is who to turn to
for assist. if not its up to linux members and community to come to the fore.

Ok thats it, Windows has totally screwed the world over, well the computing world that is, Im posting this because I am completely fed up with Microsofts Bullshit. Just to post this I had to reboot 3 times, 3 TIMES!!! My windows restart button lately has been the one on the power bar.
What the hell do they think there doing down there, Bill Gates needs to be beat, and beat, and beat once more just to get even with all of the crap he has brought into this world. There is never a day, or even an hour when I am happy with Windows, either it having to be manually rebooted 5 times in a 5hr workday, or having your programs unexpectetly close and never open again unless you reboot, or the endless lists of viruses, ad-ware, spyware, trojans, worms, and anything else that has to do with windows. The Windows icon should be litterially smashed and history will show that windows was the worst thing to happen to the world since cheese in a can.

Well its because you are using ME. Just by using ME you are looking for trouble. I have not seen a single ME machine that is not unstable and crappy. XP is a much better OS than ME. But Linux still blows them all away. Now focus on getting the card to work if you ever want to truly give up Windows. My advice is call Microsoft and figure out what chip your card uses then we can tell you what driver to get.

Ok it took me a while but I finally called Microsoft and asked them what chip the mn-170 used. Well after beind forwarded through to ten different people no one had a clue about what the hell I was talking about, I even tried to refresh there memory by saying stuff like prism 2, and broadcom but to no avail. They didn't like it when the caller sayed "Linux"(someone else called actually, I was busy).

So I was wondering I can still return the mn-710 and replace it with a differnet brand that may be compatible with linux.

Any suggestions? Has to be wireless.

Maybe one that doesn't run off a USB port, but one that runs off the ethernet port
(wireless ethernet?)
