Help:Installing Themes on KDE
 

I am using Ubuntu7.10 i installed KDE from synaptic package manager.
Now i downloaded some themes from KDE no i goto applications--->Others--->login Manager it opens but it says u need to be root to make changes but on ubuntu their is no root??So how can i make changes

how did you install KDE?

Note - you can enable the root user - AFAIK: you don't need to in kubuntu. Suspect you have an incomplete install.

You put sudo before any command, then enter your password. That gives you root privileges in all the *buntus.

That only helps in CLI - OP was using the GUI.

One approach is to drag the errant menu item to the dosktop, creating a launcher. Then you can edit the launcher properties to put "gksudo" or just "sudo" at the front. Then the gui will ask for your user password. (BTW: have you tried your user password when it asks for root?)

I suspect that synaptic was used to install the "kde" package when he needed to install "kubuntu-desktop".

That would be my first guess. Here's the thread he started yesterday, to which he has never responded to any replies...

Hmmm... checking his history, he has a history of leaving threads dangling. One can only hope that the last couple of replies were helpful, but there is no way to tell.

It's quite a saga -
Has left six out of eight threads hanging. (Though he got abandoned in one of them.) In subsequent threads, it is sometimes clear he solved the previous problem, but there is no clue as to how.

Well... lets see what happens this time.

I downloaded KDE by opening snyaptic package manager and clicking on searching button i typed Kde-desktop and in the results i ticked Kde so it started downloading many files and KDE stuff.....

The solution is to install KDE properly. Then you'll get the same behavior you are used to with gnome.

If you really want to continue with the broken KDE install, you can follow the other advise I gave you...Also read carefully through the advice link in my sig - it will explain why you sometimes get abandoned.

Perhaps you're not understanding what's being said- You don't need to download the complete Kubuntu OS, only the complete Kubuntu desktop. Using the instruction I gave you earlier, it will download and install on Ubuntu.
