Help Installing OS
 

Ok, at school I got a Toshiba Portege R100. Problem is it is running Windows. Windows has a password and i cant get in as it was donated. Well here is the big prob. The laptop dosent have a CD or floppy drive. The BIOS wont support USB boot either. Any help.
It has XP, if I can hack in i can use Wubi and Windows.

Removing the CMOS battery for about a minute, then replacing it will usually reset the BIOS password.

EDIT: Sorry, just realized you meant the windows password, not BIOS.

If you're not able to boot from anything else apart from the local hard drive you're basically stuck.
If you can get your hands on a usb floppy or usb cd-rom drive you could try booting from that, but as you mentioned that probably isn't going to work...
If however it will boot from the cd-rom you can use the system-rescue-disc iso (linux based) you can get from anywhere on the internet and reset the passwd of the mickysoft partition.

Seeing that your machine has no floppy/cd drive, and you can't boot from USB; probably your best option is to physically remove the drive; and install in another box as a secondary drive. Thereafter format the drive completely; and load your OS of choice once the drive is clean.

You would need to pxe boot to some mini os then install some other OS.

The easy way to start is to connect this and another computer with a patch or better still a cross over lan cable. (most nic's auto correct for cables). Boot the other computer to knoppix 5.1. Start knoppix terminal server. (may have to add in toshiba's nic but start with default) when it is done then boot toshiba to pxe and it should boot to knoppix.

Knoppix terminal server did all the work. If you want you can then edit what is in tftp boot or use any other os like ophcrack live or another distro to install.

Knoppix could be done but it is more of a pain to do.

Could pxe boot to any network install cd/floppy image too.


Could remove hard drive and try to install on usb external or other system too.

Well i opened the laptop and found of course it isnt a stanard 2.5 inch LAPTOP drive but a 1.8 inch Mini LaPtop drive. Hmm I can buy a converter off eBay but if i go with a Windows And Ubuntu dual boot they will install drivers for the computer i install with right not the laptop. When i first boot into Windows i will probably get FOUND NEW HARDWARE: LOCATING DEVICE DRIVERS and wont it crash as all the componets are new to the installs

Your best option would probably be, as previously mentioned, PXE booting. If you hook it up via ethernet to another computer, you could boot a small netinstall image and work from there.
