Help installing applications, specifically IE, Please!!!!!!!

I need some help... I am new to Linux and need to know how to install applications, games, what have you to this silly little computer... Windows and Mac I am great with but I can't figure this thing out. I am even trying to find out what version on Linux I have and I can't even tell ya that. This is a Eee PC that I got free and it allows me to get on the internet but I am having issues. Specifically, my work has a site where I can check my schedule from home... I really need to be able to do so but the site will only work with Internet Explorer. Some people on here have sugested using "WINE" and it will work. That is all fine and dandy but it comes back to my main issue... that I can't figure out how to install anything... If anyone could take it upon themselves to help me that would be greatly appriciated.

What kind of Linux are you running?

Welcome to the forums! If you like Windows, and need to use Windows applications for work, your easiest option is to buy a netbook with Windows preinstalled, or buy a copy of Windows and install it on your EEE.

If you like Linux, though, and are willing to learn how it works, there are a lot of great applications you can install and use for free! The most popular web browser in Linux is called Firefox (you may have used it before in Windows or Mac). There is a Firefox plugin called User Agent Switcher; you might be able to use it to "fool" your work website into thinking that you're using Internet Explorer: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

Have a look in

for files *release* and/or *version*

Once you find out how to install, based on the distro I would suggest installing Virtual Box over
Wine and creating an XP/7 image to run your windows required apps.

This may depend on how much power (RAM) you have in your Eee

Often, that is untrue. Alternative browsers (firefox, opera, konqueror...) can usually be persuaded to issue a different ident string and then the application at the far end thinks that it is talking to Internet Exploder; sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

Is there any sign of an 'install and remove programs' (or anything similar) menu selection? With most Linux distributions, even a painfully cut-down one for an EE, will have something similar.
