help installing and configureing my x800 driver

ok i have tried to install the ati x800 driver from ati's website....and they diddent work...they diddent even install and i get this error when i use "yum install kmod-gflrx"

Transaction Check Error: package kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 is already installed
file /boot/System.map-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 from install of kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 conflicts with file from package kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6

and to tell you the truth i have no idea what that^ means because ive been using fc6 for less than a week. I have been through about 65 websites deticated to this problem and none of them have gave me an anwser that i can understand....so please someone help me.

Many of the websites that i have been to have asked for the info in xorg.conf so here it is

did you follow the instructions _exactly_?
also which one did you download from here? you should have chosen the first one, 'ATI Driver Installer', and set it up for Xorg 7.1. hope it helps.

well i would have fallowed the instrutctions but the ati-driver-installer-8.31.5-x86.x86_64.run when i run it i get this error

Could not open the file /root/Desktop/ati-driver…ler-8.31.5-x86.x86_64.run.\

gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

character codeing: current locale

and next to all of that i have "retry" and "cancel" buttons.

i know that your probibly going to tell me that i need to bet the 32 bit drivers but thats what i get from the 32bit download the "_64" i would assume that stands for 64bit.

p.s. i have a 32 bit system

Quote:
1 Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI Proprietary Linux driver download.
2 Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.31.5.run to launch the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.
is this what you did? i dont see how gedit is producing errors.. try and do what the instructions say again.

as i said previously, you need to follow instructions in linux exactly! linux is case sensitive and missing or adding a single character can break things or just prevent them from working! so most likely you made a typo or if you got permission errors you werent root.

did you do automatic or custom install? did you follow all of the steps all the way through? did you run the initial ('sh ...') command and the others as root or 'su'?
Quote:
Launch the Terminal Application/Window and run /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig --initial to configure the driver.

i did automatic install and i went to /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig and got this

[root@localhost ~]# /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig
bash: /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig: No such file or directory

then i went to the folder and there is nothing in there called aticonfig
