OK, what we really need is to see if your kernel recognizes your USB graphics. Unplug it, open a terminal and run
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Now plug it in, you should see in terminal how kernel handles this piece of hardware. There is Linux kernel driver for some USB VGA adapters. I think not all brands/models are supported. Also, your distro may not have this kernel driver activated by default. If this is the case then you need to reconfigure your kernel and build the module(s).

I followed your directions. Nothing happened. Then I ran the
after unplugging and replugging the device. Otherwise "dmesg | grep -i usb" mostly to see if some kind of "driver" claimed the device.
$ xrandr
output of this one should be relatively short.
$ lsusb
should give some identifying information about the device to check against support / drivers. And other means to an end.
Okay I followed your instructions and here are the results. (The desktop registered nothing and the second monitor showed nothing through all of this.)
Code:
gregg@LG:~/Desktop$ dmesg | tail -n 50

USB device 0711:5100 is not listed in kernel driver (kernel 4.2.3), however, there are reports it works, but the ID needs to be manually added to the driver source. Followed by module (re)build of course.

Ha ha. Thanks Emerson. Sounds encouraging. Now the next question is what ID? Followed by How do I add it to the driver source? And lastly How would I do a module rebuild? LOL Sorry to ask so many questions but this is the newbie forum, after all.
I'm not at home so I cannot tell you where exactly you need to edit sources. But you can get yourself ready. You need to figure out how to install kernel sources, the exact version your Linux is running. And you need to install GCC.

One concern is I want to stay with Xubuntu 15.04 while I finish a couple of projects before I upgrade to Xubuntu 15.10. If I do the kernel building etc now, will I have to do it again when I do the upgrade?
With a lot on my plate right now this may have to go on the back burner for a while. (I thought it was going to be super-easy.)
However it plays out I really do appreciate your help.
