HELP! Install problem w/ Mandrake, cannot get X to work!!!
I am having problems with installing X on my computer. Here is the relevant specs:
Asus Mobo
P2/266
Matrox Mill. G200 8MB
Viewsonic Monitor 17G and also tried Sony G200
I select all the right hardware when installing, but it always says there is an error in the configuration and that I should fix it. I've also tried various combinations including trying 640x480x8 just to try and get X to work..
what happens when booting is that it looks like things will be loading up, the monitor flickers, but then eventually goes back to the command prompt. After logging in, I've trie doing xinit, but get error msgs. the error msg says something about a path ../.../.../rgb not valid or some such.. an other times, it says something about the default font not running.
I've tried running xfs as well, but that doesn't do much for me. I am a compete linux newbie..
BTW - this is mandrake v8 install. What can I do to get my X to work? I've also tried running Xconfigurator and trying different selections there as well...
Are there compatibility issues w/ the G200 matrox card? How about w/ the maxtor ata/100 ide controller card w/ my maxtor HD? Please help! Thanks in advance..
