as stated sbove i have a ATI rage Fury Maxx Video card. for those who arn't familiar with it, it is a 64Mb dual GPU (128 PRO Chips i believe) video card.i have a 800Mhzz AMD athalon(T-Bird) with 128Mb ram with an A&V ASUS motherboard.
and i can't figure out worth the darndest how to get Linux(mandrake) to run Graphically. i can't run KDE (startx) or gnome. when i type Gnome it says: "Could not display" i believe. it has somthing to do with linux recognizing the 2 128 Chips on the video card and then stopping. i need help.
any help at all would be appreciated

Your PC wont boot into runlevel 5? Did you try init 5? Did you run xf86config? Version 4.0.2 recognizes a lot of ATI cards. You can also copy /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config.eg over your own /etc/XF86Config (make backup!) to run standard VGA, and adjust it later according to the specs of your card/monitor. Read man XF86Config! Good luck,

Matthieu

i already ran xf86config and it didn't work. i need step by step Detailed instructions. like i said im very new to Linux (mandrake). i really need help!!

OK, if you want to use linux you should know a little about Unix. It's a serious OS but still not very beginners-friendly. (It will be in future, I'm sure). You can find some basic commands on this site:

http://personal.inet.fi/private/toma...sson/unix.html

Experiment a lot, and for details on a command, type:
man command
and the manual page will be displayed. (Leave with q).

About your problem: If you ran xf86config (as root) and found your card and you set the settings for your monitor right, it shoult work, but if it doesn't I think it's best to use your card as a simple VGA-card. Now the instructions:
Log in as root.
type the next lines:

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config ~/XF86Config.bak
cp /usr/X11R6/lib/XF86Config.eg /etc/X11/XF86Config

try to start X again (startx).

You can find a lot of info on your problem on:
http://www.xfree.org/3.3.6/index.html

btw XFree is a beast, but once it runs, its very nice to work with.

Succes,

Matthieu

What distro are you using?
What messages are you getting if any when you issue startx
command?

You could try this site and print out the how to docs they are very straight forward

Hope this helps ..

maybe

One one hand.. I have heard it doesn't work, regardless of how it looks during install.

But.. on the other hand I've heard it will work. Since there are two rage chips on the card, I have heard you need to configure your XF86Config file to reflect two chips. So you need to have two adapter sections, two monitor sections, two screen configs, etc.

Maybe that will look something like the XF86Config file a dual-headed system?

i have also heard that it will wokr with 2 of everything but i do not know how to do it. if anyone knows how i would appreciate instructions VERY much.

gustav 04-26-2001 01:56 AM

same here

Well, Paul
I've got the same problem and I'm looking in to it.
Can you tell me which version you're using?

In 7.1 everything worked normally. It's when I downloaded 7.2 things got wrong. Now I have 8.0 and still there no sign of life...
I'll try experimenting bit with the XF86 files and let you know.

Good luck
Gustav

gustav 05-16-2001 03:46 PM

it worked

Well guys, i can give you some hope...

As i said, i'm using Mandrake 8.0... well after a lot of trying en retrying i found a solution. it actually quite stupid: i took the Automatic Installation instead of the Expert. If you want to tweak the other items of the installation in expert mode, you can start in expert en change to automatic just before the configuration of X, but i'm not sure of that.
anywaz, if he can choose everything by himself, there are no problems. try it... it may work.
if not i can sent you my X-configfile...
