Help, I think I am in bad shape here!
 

I just talk to my friend and I mentioned to him that I have a computer in Europe that was built recently. Its an Intel P4 and etc....

I asked him if the Mandrake Linux CDs (which I purchased from Linuxcentral) would be able to work and install on that computer in Europe, and says he beleives it won't because of the international coding system or something like that.

Does this mean I could kiss Linux good bye?

I think I am screwed.

And as a matter of fact, I have data backups on CD-Rs too. So its not just the Linux thing.

The main differences will be the power, RFI standards, and modem. Think about it for a second. Mandrake Linux is a French company. They aren't going to produce a product that they themselves can't use. If the computer has a modem, it may not work in the states. If the video card also has a video output, it will be PAL or SECAM instead of NTSC video.

My main concern is that I would like to get these Linux CDs installed on that machine. The machine will have an external modem which came with the PC. Also, it will have a flat-panel monitor to make more desk space.

Even if I won't be able to connect to the net, I don't care. I am just wondering if it will accept the Linux installation.

So, am I basically screwed with Linux on that PC???

Well, by "international coding issue" I understood some kind of keyboard/chars display problems. But you can specify what problem is this.

If is that so, you can rest safe. These problems no longer bother anybody. You can select any kind of keyb config during setup, along with keyb layout.

People here at LQ have been using Mandrake in every corner of this little planet. No internationalization issue has been reported so far.

Ok, lets say you hypothetically try to install mandrake in this situation and it doesn't work, what have you lost? Maybe the 30 minutes of your life during install time? Time you could have spent blankly staring into space?

It not like, your computer will read the offending disk. And then because it can't install the software, flash "F U" on the screen and burst into flames.

Or am I missing something?

After all, you prolly have spent more time on here trying to get people to reassure you then you would have if you just thrust the disks in, ran the install.

Just like I could have been surfing for porn instead of commenting on this thread...

I can't try the disk because I am not there yet. It's impossible. I want to just prepare myself with this.

Yes it will, go for it, come back when you encounter any problems.

unixfreak -- you cannot expect people to be able to predict the future. Things will probably work out fine with those disks. If not, you can just download the ISO's for free and reinstall. It's OK, seriously. -- J.W.

Well...... I will have dial-up there so that would probably take me for ever to download. But If I have to, I'll wait it out.
