No, it would need to be of the mounted partition(s).

want to add my new 100gb usb storage device
i have partitioned, formatted, labeled, mounted, edited fstab several times and the most i have got was 87 gbs
now when i click removable storage i have a file with partition 6 on it and cant even open it.
Quote:
Disk /dev/sda: 100.0 GB, 100030242816 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 12161 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Quote:
Yes thats the problem....everything looks ok except my file manager shows my removable drive as only having 14.79 gbs and i would like it to be somewhat accurate......plus i don't understand how everything else seems to add up fine except the file manager.
I don't understand what your real problem is. You are confusing yourself and you're confusing everyone here. Somewhere you complain about the disk size being reported as 87GB yet, do not provide any solid evidence to prove it. Elsewhere, you complain that, the disk size is reported as 14.79GB without any supporting data.

Output from fdisk doens't seem to be consistent with anything !Say for eg. the last cylinder of extended partition is 6083 while the last cylinder of the disk itself and of the partition sda2 is 12161. Is that a typo on your part ? The partitions and cylinder numbers are not in order besides the discrepancy I mentioned above.

My advice is that, you start from scratch. Delete all the partitions on the disk. Before you recreate, the partitions, think about the number of partitions (primary/logical) and size of each those partitions and put it down on a piece of paper and have it handy by your side. Now, you go and create the partitions ending up with a clean partition table. The partitions and the cylinder numbers should be in the correct order.

Once, done take a look at the output of fdisk -l and see if everything is all right. Next thing to do would be, format the partitions with the filesystem of your choice (be it FAT, NTFS or ext3) and mount them somewhere. Now if you look at the output of df -h, you should be able to see a fairly correct output. If the discrpancy is too much, somewhere, something went wrong. You can comeback and report what is happening.

I spend days on here looking for help and get none.......instead i get "start all over" ...........I don't know whats so hard to understand file manager says 14.79 gigs all other readouts say 100 gigs....and i have copied and pasted everything anyone has asked for so don't say I didn't provide proof.

Expat-

KevKim is not saying that you did not provide proof. What I understand from that post is that your partitioning scheme does not make any sense. I agree. If you do not have any vital information on your drive, your quickest solution is to repartition, reformat and remount. Once you have it remounted, then you can add the fstab entries.

Good Luck.

OK, I din't notice earlier that you were running Xandros. If I remember it right, it is something that you run off the CDROM ! Would it be possible for you to connect your USB disk to another computer and check the partition sizes or if you have windows installed you can check the sizes in windows.

I just read on another thread of yours, where you complain about some weird problems with /etc/fstab. Looks like Xandros has a weird way of doing things. May be your problem has to do with Xandros.
