Since i haven't used windows 98, i'm doubtful that if he has reinstalled his 98 then why it didn't overwrite the grub in mbr ???
Do you manually require to "fdisk /mbr" in case of 98.???

"fdisk /mbr" rewrites the windows mbr no matter which windows version is installed

in newer version of win u need to use "fixmbr"

Agree.
What i intended to ask was that generally when we reinstall windows XP it automatically rewrites mbr. But here why we have to use "fdisk /mbr" manually ??? Doesn't win 98 after reinstallation, in case of dual booting, overwrites the grub boot loader in mbr ??

just to check that windows was installed correctly, but the MBR wasn't

u can rewrite the win mbr using fdisk /mbr or fixmbr
