Smile Help. Gravis Eliminator gamepad with Zsnes

Help needed. How do I make Zsnes recognize my Gravis Eliminator's D-pad. It recognizes the analog stick but has issues with the d-pad. When i click a button to assign a button to, it won't recognize some of the d-pads directions.
