Help getting me connected to the internet with Mandrake 9
 

I just installed Mandrake on my spare drive. I don't how to get it to connect to the internet through my cable modem.

Under Windows XP all I have to do is just type in the ID in the network ID that ATT broadband gave me and I'm in.

How do I do it with Mandrake. I'm pretty clueless with Linux and really want to learn more about it.

use kppp(in Kde) or or the Gnome dialer(do not remember the name) U'll find them in the Kde or Gnome menu under the Internet(or network) sub menu.

Press F1 if U need help on any of them Kde Help Centre has a good Help File on how to use kpp. Even if U wont be able to connect U'll learn a lot about Internet connection protocols and Modems.

You could try running the wizard in the control centre, or after making sure that you have the documentation installed, dig through that (personally I hate trying to read long complicated stuff from a screen!) or you could search or post here for some mandrake specific help and idea's.

Sorry I can't offer any real assistance, but I have only managed to get my usb adsl modem working with assistance/luck/hit and miss, and I know squat about linux.

I did all those. I did the wizard thing and it ask me for all the info which I never need it when I install XP. ATT broadband assing the IP address automatically right if you enable DCHP

I installed the version 8 on a different PC at my brother and I didn't have to do anything it connected me to the internet automatically. There's no router on his PC. I'm running mine through a router I wonder if that can cause the problem.

I used to run version 8 on my PC with a router and never had problem with it.

This Linux is harder than I thought. The installation part had gotten so much better and easier though I must say. I'm just so used to Windows and it's frustrating that I have to learn new term and navigating around to find what I'm looking for.

Any suggestion for a book out there that I can read and understand more about this ?:confused:

What kind of card are you using and what kind of router? What happens when you type ifconfig in a shell? Check /var/log/messages, and look for eth0. I

Just for info, if, like me, you are a "dyed in the wool" window$ user, then the frustration/stress level is only going to get worse!

I get mega stressed everytime I try and do something with my linux install.

But, I also get stubborn. I won't have some stupid OS get the better of me.

Your system WILL work, it's just a case of working out how to configure it correctly - unfortunately, while the answer might be straight forward - finding that answer might not be!

Just keep at it.

I have realtek motherboard with Lan built-in and I beleive it's also made from them.

We should really try to read questions a little more closely before answering them as he's connecting thru a cable modem, kppp or the Gnome dialer is useless in this case and is used for dialing up.

But anyways, NickyCt, is it possible to get a model specific for your NIC, I've never heard of Realtek making motherboards but they do make NIC's. You might have that reversed but we would want to be for sure before so we know what type of driver or module to use for your card, to also know for sure if its supported or not.

trickykid. You're right. I made a typo on the name of the motherboard. It's Leadtek 7350KDA. The Built-in LAN is from Realtek RTL8139/810X
Like I said I didn't have to do anything with Version 8 but It just won't connect with version 9
