help for a newbie

Hello friends,

well I am new to this forum and new to linux in general. I want to install and learn linux so I am gathering information. So here go the questions:

1. after I install ths OS, where do I get device drivers for my devices?
2. do I nees SAMBA to communicate with other windows computer on my network and is it provided with the OS?

Thank you and look forward to hearing your responses, as I am very eager to try out linux.

most recent distributions have installed the drivers that your system needs because they probe your system first before going to the install proper. so you don't have to worry about where you can find your drivers.

i believe samba is included in some of the major distributions all you need to do is configure it.

thank you very much for your response. so you are saying that if I had a REALTEK AC' 97 soundcard that the driver would automatically be provided by the OS?
And I guess this is a silly question, but I figure that I had to download programs written specifcally for linux right? And is there any way that I can run windows programs under linux? Thanks again for the support.

thats right, look at www.samba.org for further infos, how-toŽ s about samba.
a short hint:

1) add a linux user equal to your windows username, identical password
2) add an identical samba user (-> smbpasswd)
3) configure your smb.conf
4) have fun ;-)

for running win-appz under linux look at these projects:

WINE
NeTraverse's Win4Lin

For MS Office Products take a look at Codeweaver's Cross Over Office.
