Help. cant get opensuse or ubuntu to work

Ok so i just started using linux by buying mandriva one from thelinuxshop everything worked fine until i decide i want to switch to Opensuse, so i download the live cd burn it and start trying to boot it up everything works fine i can choose what boot option i want but when i have chosen my boot option after the loading screen everything goes black and after a few minutes my cd drive stops spinning and i have to restart my pc.

Eventually after minutes of searchin for answers i find a thread about installing it through textmode, fine i do that it works and then when i reboot my pc same thing happens again, only this time it happens when i boot from my hard drive :(. So i figure maybe its opensuse not my pc.

I decide to try ubuntu see if that works but no luck same thing. Black screen after loading screen.

So either its my pc or im only ever gonna get mandriva to work :( i want options xD

PC specs: amd athlon 64 x2 5000+, 1gig ram, nvidia 9500gt, n68pv-gs asrock Motherboard

Please help...

Hello GNAS,

Wellcome to LQ, I think Suse and Ubuntu have no modules for your graphics-card on their installation-CD. What versions of Suse or Ubuntu are you using? If they are older then Mandriva I'd recommend to get later versions. If this is not the case, try lsmod on all systems to find out about which moduls you need for the card to work properly. Find out how to start Suse or Ubuntu in Text-mode.

The 'live' version might not have everything you need. Download the full install of openSUSE 11.1 (1 DVD, about 4 GB), and it should work. nVidia works right out of the box, and if not, you can use the vga or vesa drivers, and get the updated drivers from the nVidia website.

No problem, but you're using the live version, made to run from CD/USB, rather than the 'full' version. Give it a shot, and be sure to check out the nVidia site, as they have full driver sets available for Linux.
