Help! can't mount volume: wrong fs type

My disk just stopped working. I plugged into another machine running Win and ran ubuntu from CD ROM.

Ran disk utility. Thisis what I got
Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sb1. missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

Please help me or I'll suicide or worse... will have to go back to Windows :)

Have you tried reformatting it? Hopefully it will work then.

Thanks but I was hoping to recover the files and learn how to solve the problem, so it doesn't happen again. One reason I am trying Linux is to avoid periodic data loss.

You could try fsck on it; do this without mounting it first.

fsck.aufs: not found (?)

Code:

k1ltro,

i think you didn't read the link properly. try /sbin/fsck , if this doesn't work try /etc/fsck. Select options required.
