help a total newbie and feel better....
 

Hey all,

i just got my first linux install done, and i need some help with tricky drivers...

i installed fedora core 1 on my hp pavillion ze5600 laptop, surprisingly without much difficulty....BUT....i really really need to find some drivers for the gfx card....

its an ati mobility IGP345m, and i could use some drivers....i would prefer RPMS, if at all possible....

also, my sound, although working, is very quiet....ive tried messing with the volume controls etc, but with no progress....

if anyone can help me out, i'd really appreciate it!

hmm...I hate to say this, but you may be out of luck. It seems that the _card_ will work, but there's really no effective 3D support for it (and I assume that's why you're asking, not because you boot up and get nothing but a black screen?)

not actually bothered about 3d performance, as i have a "somewhat" overclocked gaming rig (which im typing on atm)...however 2d perf is poor, and dvd playback is nasty....

i just assumed that the correct driver for the card would be a good way around this?

That'd be a great way around it, but the problem is a driver for that card doesn't _exist_.

Noone makes one, it's HP's responsibility as the laptop maker to have one written and they're not bothering :-/

*wow* ok...after some tracking down, it appears that someone's written a patch that might make this work. I'm not sure if your card is one of the tested ones, but I'm also not sure of the family of card you've got. Look that one up on ATI.com to be sure.

The link I found is here: http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314. Jump to comment #233, and follow the instructions in get_dri_xfree_install.txt. (I got that link from this thread.. There's a good explanation and some people who've gotten it working there.)

However, if you're looking to avoid mess and not turn your hair prematurely grey, frankly I'd just try each of the built-in ones until you find one that doesn't look like sh*t :D
