vmware, parallels. There are several. You could also try to download and burn a LiveCD, which will run without modifying your existing OS installation. Be aware that LiveCDs are rather slow because everything runs from CD and they have to do all h/w detection on each boot, so you would experience a huge speed up if you installed instead.

One thing about your post - please use a more useful subject in future - lots of people won't read something simply titled "help", I only did cos it's a slow day :D

lol ok thanks alothave you used vmware?

Yeah, I've used vmware, although not on a daily basis. I tend to use it to try out LiveCDs. It was easy to install on Ubuntu Edgy (it's in the multiverse repository with the package name "vmplayer").

It's pretty good, although any of these virtual machines are pretty heavy on memory, so if you've got less than 512 MiB of RAM you might struggle a bit.

qemu is free/libre but very slow unless you get hold of the proprietary "accelerator" kernel module. I had a lot of trouble installing this though, and gave up (that was a while ago now, so it might be easier these days). You can use the qemu-img tool to make image files for use with vmplayer :D

I've not used parallels myself, but the folks on the Linux Link Tech show seem to like it a lot, as do the Security Now netcast folks.

What are the "necessary plugins", where are they, and how do I install them?

I googled around and found a few other people having the same problem but no clear answer. I'm really new to Linux and need some real step-by-step instructions. Thanks.

What does this have to do with this thread?
