im trying to move a file to /usr/local from the desktop and it keeps telling me that i dont have permition to do this -- how do i get permition

firstly, you read the rules and various instructions about posting threads with stupid titles.

Secondly, if you open a terminal window and then do an "su" (no quotes) command, put in the root password when asked, then just do the move as normal.

If you need to do that graphically, then you'll need to be logged in as root's graphic interface account.

John.

p.s. the first one isn't to "jump down your throat" but half the time, those people here, who have valuable knowledge will not bother answering post's, where the "postee" doesn't have the manners to identify the problem in a proper way!

thank you -- and sorry about the title

"If you need to do that graphically, then you'll need to be logged in as root's graphic interface account."

If you need to do that graphically, then enter the command
kdesu konqueror
at the command prompt

So, as I don't want to actually try that (I'm in the middle of "emerging" a new kernel + a stack of other package upgrades), does that actually open a second "su'd" kde session but as root? or does it log you out of one, then into the root session?

Cheers for the clarification.

regards

John
