Help!!

This is the deal, I finally decided to make the giant leap from Windows to Linux so I installed Mandrake 9.2 along with windows. All of the installation process was ok. The problems came when I decided to install more packages that come with the cd. For some reason I cannot install the other packages or any package because of "Bad signature". Here is the message that I get
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[X]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following packages have bad signatures:

lbbreakout2-2.4.1-3mdk.i586.rpm: Missing signature(Could not read lead bytes)
libSDL_mixer1.2-1.2.5-3mdk.i586.rpm: Missing signature(Could not read lead bytes)
tuxrace-0.61-15mdk.i586.rpm: Missing signature(Could not read lead bytes)

Do you want to continue installation?

[ YES ] [ No ]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even If I click "yes" it wont' install.

Please. I totally new to Linux so I will need clear instructions on how to solve this problem. thank you.

It looks like you may have a bad CD on your hands. Verify the integrity of the CD image, then burn it again.

you can also get the rpm's from another source to avoid reburning the entire distro cd - try a google search on the filename, or at a site like:

http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/

run a search on this board for rpm installation instructions, it's been explained much better than I can

I still get the same problem!

ok. I checked for file integrity and all of the files were all right..
I also burn the files again and still I could not install the RPM Packages..
I also searched this forum and no topic relating to my problem.
PLZ anyone

Schiller!

If I and hundreds of thousands of others can learn linux from scratch then I think you can to.

Dont go back to sleep on windoze!!... Linux is a whole new world!

I've only been using it for two weeks and I've gone from being completly clueless in everyway, to being slightly less clueless and FAR more confident about learning more and making my way around.

Dont be put off by the error messages! The process of solving the problem teaches you SO MUCH! It'll be hard for awhile but once you have tasted the empowerment offered by the penguin you will probably never want to go back to the clutches of M$.

As for the installation.. why dont you try re-installing a different package?
Keep trying.. try different things.. See what happens.

Good luck!

thnks

thanks for the support. I am really excited about Linux and I wish to use Linux bacause my windoze is no longer doing its job(I think the blue screens is what windoze is the beast at)
. I will continue to look for solutions

why dont you try using a different distibutor?

like redhat
ive heard that mandrake is easier for new linux users, and i am a newbie

but im running redhat and it seems to be fine

Schiller 12-10-2003 09:57 PM

Well, I am using mandrake bacause I like the user friendly environment (GUI) I will try something else as long as it is easy for me to begin with ( I am newbie)....
If you can give me some recommendations that will be great...:jawa:

the truth is mandrake is actually one of the best choices for a linux newbie, but it would seem there is something wrong with your cd or perhaps your install...

did you verify the md5 of the iso images you downloaded? (very important)

in the event that the cd is corrupted because the iso's md5 value doesn't match (or any other reason), then the thing to do would be to re-install using properly-burned cds...

however, one thing you can do that MIGHT help right now is change your sources... what i mean by this is: "tell mandrake to stop looking in the cds for the rpms, and instead use a server on the internet"...

you can do this using mandrake's "software sources manager":

"START" MENU | Configuration | Packaging | Software Sources Manager

or by using the command-line:

here's an example of what commands it would take to point your box away from the cds and toward the kernel.org server:

urpmi.removemedia -a

urpmi.addmedia rpms ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mandrake/9..../Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia rpms2 ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mandrake/9....Mandrake/RPMS2 with ../base/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia updates ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mandrake/updates/9.2/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz

then you could make sure everything's up-to-date:

urpmi --auto-select

and then you could try to install your stuff again, for example if you wanted to install tux racer:

urpmi tuxracer
