Hello & Please help with install problem

Hello to all,
I am new at this. At the beginning of installation from a Ubuntu 7.04 boot CD, I am getting the following error message "/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off", then the line below it has "(initramfs)". Who can help me with getting past this? I haven't even gotten a chance to set up the hard drive.
Thank You and I hope I can be of help to others when I learn and gain experience,
George

Specs for the Install Computer Problem

Hello,

I had to leave apbruptly yesterday. I appreciate the help. I have a Compaq Deskpro EXM P333. Chipset: Intel 815; Processor: Pent.3; RAM-256MB; HDD: Maxtor 20GB; CD-ROM; Floppy; Sound and Video RAM: onboard. I ran a successful diagnostics tests through the BIOS on the HDD. The POST seems to be OK. Once it gets to the OS, I get the "Non-system or disk error. I then boot with the CD I made when I downloaded the image file from the Ubuntu website on my WinXP machine which is a Gateway. With the CD, the system boots to the ubuntu menu, Loading the Linux kernal, the ubuntu logo appears, then a black screen with the message:
"BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)"
"Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands."
"/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off"
"(initramfs)"

Thank You!

Have you tried the Ubuntu alternate install disk? It's a text based installer because the Ubuntu graphical installer has known issues with certain Intel graphics chipsets. Note: it's ONLY the installer...once you install Ubuntu it will operate fine with the Intel graphics chipset.

Try that and let me know if it helps.

Success!

Hello,

I appreciate the feedback and have a successful resolution. I downloaded the "alternate" install program. I have not used a text-based install program for a long time, but this was user-friendly, efficient, and thorough.

I look forward to learning the OS. I troubleshooted the mouse. It appears that the Plug&Play capabilities through the USB port are very good. I was amazed at how it integrated onto the wired Windows network. I had a quick connection to the Net. I have already successfully set up the Canon PIXMA i4000 printer which is connected on the WinXP Home computer. It prints from the Open Office Word program.

The bundled applications on the install disk show a complete understanding of what a user will need especially, the Firefox browser and the Open Office programs.

Thank You
