hello

Not really new to Linux, just new to anything beyond gui dummy friendly, need to ask a few dum questions about command line and syntax. Your patience will be appreciated.

Welcome olepholks! The CLI is fun.

mobinskariya 09-18-2009 11:12 PM

if you are not familiar to CLI just open a terminal and type the following command
Code:

info coreutils
you can find commands that are frequently used and their functions.

Linux stds etc:

1. ieee posix 1003.* : the official 'Unix' stds. You have to pay to have your system tested & certified by IEEE & The Open Group http://get.posixcertified.ieee.org/.
There are a lot of Linux distros, and none have ever done this afaik, not even Redhat. Therefore Linux is a workalike *nix system, but not an official Unix/Posix system.

2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Standard_Base : an attempt by the Linux community to standardize the basics

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesys...archy_Standard attempt to standardize Linux file system layout
