headphones not working

when I listen to youtube or skype, I can only make out about one word in ten because the sound keeps cutting in and out. It is sort of buzzy, like a seriously scratchy cd. I tested with the soundrecorder and got the same buzzy sound. but I know the problem is with the headphones, not with the mike, because when I skype my friend, he hears me perfectly and his sound is just too blurred to understand.

when I plugged my headset in to one of the computers at the computer land, I got perfect sound quality in my skyping. So I know the problem is with my computer, not with my headset.

As per someone's advice I went to Sound Preferences and changed all my devices to ALSA, but it hasn't helped. I really don't understand what pressing the test buttons on Sound Preferences accomplishes though. It just beeps at me and I don't know what it means.

It may help if you could provide more information about your system.

If it cuts in and out when you play audio that is NOT online, then it sounds like your problem a flaky computer-headphone connection (soundcard or headphone). Have you tried to play audio files from your local hard-drive to see if there is still a problem? Otherwise, you can't yet rule out a bad internet connection.

If your system is old or home-built, maybe you have a bad soundcard? You may have a bad speaker connector or the headset may not fit well in the machine or strains the cord in a different way than on the other computer you tried.
