Hi. I hope I'm in the right place for these questions!

Headphones My laptop plays sound fine, but when I connect the headphones nothing comes through (the laptop speakers are muted).

Limewire I have Limewire basic installed and have tried to install Turbo but I get an error message that says it will conflict and won't allow the installation. Could anyone tell me how to uninstall Limewire Basic and then install Turbo?

I'm on Ubuntu and think this is the best OS I've ever used. It's so sharp, clean and fast. I'm not going to give up because of these small gliches so any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Might sound silly ... but why is there no sound in headphones ? Is your headphone working fine ?

Many laptops have an option to enable/disable the various sound outputs depending on what is plugged in. For example, on my laptop when I plug in some headphones the headphones socket gets the sound output and the speakers are disabled.

To find this option, right-click on the sound utility in your menu bar, select "Open Volume Control". From here, go to the Edit menu and choose Preferences. There may well be a whole bunch of options that have not been selected... select some. When you click on Close you may find a bunch of new options available to you - one such option might just be something about autosending the headphone socket.

Hello and thanks for the replies. I've done the apt-get you suggested in a terminal but nothing happens. Can I not just uninstall the current Limewire from Add/Remove? (It's not listed though).

It's not a silly question, but yes the headphones work fine elsewhere. For Thymox, thanks. I ticked everything and then enabled it all in the mixer but still no sound through the headphones, although when I plug them in the sound from the laptop is muted.

I installed Ubuntu from Wubi and I'm running it "alongside" windows xp until I've got used to it and moved everything I need to keep. Would the presence of windows xp have an effect on the headphone utility in Ubuntu?

Sorry for asking what are probably dumb questions. Though I like to think I'm quite savvy, it looks like I'm not as good as I thought!! Thanks for your suggestions.

The presence of Windows would not affect it. Although WUBI allows you to install Linux "within" Windows, when you boot to Linux, the Windows system is not running.
