HDTV not getting any resolution higher than 800x600 when used as a monitor?
Okay, so here is the deal I have been using Ubuntu for awhile as a network monitoring system and have now changed it to being my main system and was wondering why when my machine is hooked up to my HDTV via a VGA port on the back of VIZIO television, I am only getting a max resolution of 800x600? If anyone can help me with this problem it would be awesome.
Any additional information needed please include you terminal commands because I am still just so terrible with those. Thank you for your time. |
You need to post what video card you are using and what video driver. Linux comes with generic video drivers that may not handle HDTV resolution. You will likely need to install a proprietary ATI or Nvidia driver. On ubuntu, these can easily be installed: http://www.ehow.com/how_5104522_inst...rs-ubuntu.html
If you already have the correct video drivers installed, your TV may not be communicating to your computer with the correct capabilities it has. If this is the case, you will need to manually create a configuration file to set the correct output resolution. Try posting the specific TV model you have. For example, here is one working configuration file for a Vizio VX37L television: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Vizio_VX37L To use the one linked above, you would open gedit as root: sudo gedit Cut and paste the text and save it as: /etc/xorg.conf Make sure you find one for your specific TV first. |
Here is the output of the of the "lspci -v" command in the terminal.
Because I am not sure which one is needed because of the fact that I am a built-in VGA Controller that is built-in to the motherboard. Also, the model of the TV is down at the bottom. If anyone could help find what I am looking for faster than I can that would be great, if not any additional help would be awesome. 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. Your on board video card is Via Chrome 9. The video driver you need is openchrome: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome
Your TV has a native resolution of 1366x768: http://www.vizio.com/vo320e.html#techspecs I would suggest installing xserver-xorg-video-openchrome, then see if you get the correct output resolution automatically. |
All right I am trying a few things right now to see if I can get it working I'll post whether I get it working.

Still didn't work i tried to install the packet that you suggested and it still didn't work. I also went to the documentation site that you posted and then followed there directions step by step and when i was prompted to restart my box my GUI crashed and was only left with the terminal prompt and had to revert back to the original drivers to be able to see GUI again. Man this is getting frustrating.
