HDD Recovery via SSH

Hello all!

Recently my server crashed for no apparent reason and well does not boot anymore, so the only thing I can do is work via the rescue CD and SSH. I thought I could just choose /etc /var and /home via WinSCP and just copy them to my home work station, but the thing is, it appears to go into a loops. The HDD is 167GB in size, but the files that it downlaods goes up to 300Gb plus and does not seem so stop at any time. The same goes if I try to tar those directories, it just tars until the HDD space runs out.

Is there anyway to just simply copy my files?

Sounds like the data on the hard drive is seriously corrupt. I'd suggest making an image of the various partitions of that hard disk using dd and then try running fsck on a copy of the relevant image(s) to see if you can get the file system back into semi normal state.

It might also be useful to run the various SMART self tests on the drive to see just how bad the situation is.

Either way, I certainly hope you have back-ups from before the drive failed!
