hda: interrupt fail

I'm attempting to install Slackware Linux on an old IBM Aptiva E series 572. The system has an AMD Athlon 500Mhz processor.

However, as the Linux kernel is unpacking itself, it hangs at the message, hda: interrupt fail
Then it repeats, hda: interrupt fail
Then it says the max request from hda is 128 KiB
Then it just prints hda: _ and hangs indefinitely, til I kill the entire system, and reboot.

Any Suggestions?

It sounds like either the disk is bad, or the disk controller, or there is a problem with the driver in use and your system's hardware.
