Having trouble installing ubuntu on ps3
 

I'm trying to install ubuntu on my ps3 but I cant get past the second step of installing the base system. It will get to about 75% and will dsplay a box saying: "Unable to install the selected kernel. An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into the target system. Kernel package: 'linux-cell'. Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for the details. <Go Back> <Continue>
How do I solve this?
To let you guys know, I'm only average with computers but really new to linux. So I really appreciate it when you guys keep the advice in simple, laman terms. Thanks again.

Are you are following a guide somewhere? If so you should post the link. What happens after the package fails and you press Continue?

It would also be helpful to post what other error messages your system is giving, I am not sure about on the PS3 but on most linux boxes pressing Alt + Fn will switch to terminal n, so to see terminal 4 you should press Alt + F4, (or sometimes Ctrl + Alt + F4). You can find out what terminal you are on with the "tty" command.

If you can get to a terminal you can see the contents of /var/log/syslog with the command "less /var/log/syslog"

Did you even look at the logs that were suggested? If so post them so we can assist you. Instead of shooting in the dark.

I thought the Ubuntu PPC project had effectively (officially) been killed. There was a PS3 CD built from the 7.10 base, I'm not aware of anything later.
Might be better to look elsewhere - yellowdog perhaps.

I got the solution FINALLY (to my own question)
 

After you get to somewhere around 75% in installing ubuntu gutsy base system you get an error saying unable to install base system. Don't worry about, just hit continue and go back to installing the base system again. It will say something like proceed to unclean target. Say yes and the same thing will happen around 75% again. Don't flip, because this time they give you a choice of which kernel to use. I picked the last one and from there its pretty easy. Hope this helps some new guy out there like me. And by the way syg00, I have tried yellow dog 5.0.1 on my ps3, and it isn't nearly as beginner friendly as ubuntu.
