Having trouble installing NVIDIA drivers.
I am following the guide on installing NVIDIA drivers from the FAQ.
I CTRL ALT F2 and login as root, enter password, then telinit 1 after enter, the code starts scrolling and everything seems fine but then hangs. Last lines showing are: LOADING Keymap: OK LOADING System font: OK Telling INIT to go to Single user mode. INIT: Going to single user INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal sh-2.05b# Tried the procedure three times, same results each time. I can enter telinit 5 at the sh-2.05b# line and it boots back to GUI. Using RH8 KDE. Booting from floppy. No Bootloader installed. |
What exactly is wrong? Single user mode doesnt sound right, but I see no other error.

Going by what the instructions say after doing telinit 1 enter shouldn't
I end up back at a Login: instead of sh-2.05b# ? Because it says to log back in with root. |
hrmm, what distro are you using?
|
What instructions are you using? Compare to those linked to in my sig.
You could exit and then log in as root again-redundant, or do they mean log in as root at a graphical login-bad practice? Have you tried glxgears or some OpenGL game after this to check the drivers arent working? |
Using RH8 KDE. Booting from floppy. No Bootloader installed.

"What instructions are you using?"
They are from the FAQ listed at top of Newbie board. "Have you tried glxgears or some OpenGL game after this to check the drivers arent working?" Tried using Tux Racer. Barely runs. Chromium runs real slow with lowest settings. 1GHz Athlon TBird 256MB RAM GeForce 2MX 64MB |
