Having trouble installing backtrack 5.
 

I'm in a situation.....need help!
I'm installing backtrack 5 on my lappi (acer-64-bit)...i have windows 7 64-bit .
i've used VirtualBox as well as VMWARE but same error is there.
"This Kernel requires an x86 CPU, but only detected an 1686 CPU"
i have 64 bit lappi as well as 64 bit win 7 installed....
dont know what to do now...

Don't know for VMware, but at least in Virtualbox this error appears when you don't tell the VM that you want to install a 64 bit system. So for Backtrack 5R3 I would recommend to set the operating system to Ubuntu 64 bit.

Virtual Box Don't have an option for ubuntu 64-bit....its just ubuntu out there...

The easiest solution will be to download a 32-bit backtrack 5 iso image file instead of the 64-bit variety.

I am not sure of the reason behind this, but I think that it has something to do with how Vmware and virtual box read the cpu in their system. They see it as a 32-bit and not a 64-bit. Thus, you need to use a 32-bit virtual machine on that particular computer.

If the 64 bit option does not appear that means that your CPU is not capable of hardware virtualization or it is disabled in the BIOS of your machine. This feature is needed to run 64 bit guests in Virtualbox.
Which CPU do you have in that machine?

Here i have attached pics of my real problem, my laptops dxdiag details as well as list of kernels offered by virtual box to me...
Now i'm gonna download 32-bit backtrack 5 to check if the problem is solved....Thanks for the help!.

Intel disables hardware virtualization in its entry-level processor lines, like the Pentium CPUs, so even when you can get it working (the 32 bit version should run) it most likely will be awfully slow. I recommend to make a native installation or run it from a live-medium.

Moreover i cant find any virtualization feature in my System's BIOS

Your CPU does not support virtualization, this is why you can't find those features. Nonetheless Virtualbox is able to do software virtualization, but it is slow and only works with 32 bit guests.

So changing my lappi is the last option???? Is'nt there anything which can help me with this???

As I said before, you can either install it alongside your Windows installation, so that you can choose at boot time which OS you want to run, or you use it as a Live-CD/DVD/USB. No need for changing the hardware, Backtrack should run fine on that machine, only not in a VM.

You mean i need to dual boot windows and linux..
Okay but do tell me which backtrack i should boot (32-bit or 64-bit)???

I would always go for 64 bit on machines with 2GB or more of RAM.

i have tried dual booting 64-bit backtrack 5....installing appeared for a second only and then all black....i've waited long but of no use.....what is it now?

Did it boot to a Desktop where you clicked the install icon? Did you just boot the CD/DVD and before anything else happened the screen went black? Or something else?
