Having problems with Mandrake 9.1 and Red Hat 9
Hello all. This looks like a nice forum.
Anyway I'm knew to linux. So I have a few questions for all you wise blocks. 1, I got hold of Mandrake Linux 9.1 a few months ago and 2 weeks ago I decided to install it. I ran it together with WinXP. It ran ok. but the only real problem I had with it was that sometimes while using the KSCD player ( I think its called) Mandrake would freeze and even when pressing "Ctrl,Alt backwards. After the xserver began up again it would just stay stuck. So I had to always restart the system by presseing reset. I also had this prob with a few other apps. Other then that I loved Mandrake (Although my Lucent Winmodem didn't work. But I found out that thats because its a software modem etc.) So I decided to rather install Lindows 3.0 Well all I can say is that the damn thing kept on crashing and freezing and the click and run thing is irrating. So I got Red Hat Linux 9.0 2, I installed it over my other Linux partions etc. My Red Hat system is incredably slow. I don't like Red Hat, although it has been very stable. I really want to go back to Mandrake Linux 9.1 but if its unstable again  . I don't know what I should do:scratch: . I need your help should I stick with Red Hat 9.0 :Pengy: If it will run at a decent speed ( Which I would prefer not to) Or should I rather move back to Mandrake 9.1 and get the OS stable? (That is what I would prefer) But I am a :newbie: so guys what do you think. Any help is appricated. |
wait a week or so and get mdk9.2 (it's due out soon).
Don't know about your CD playter but... If X freezes, press ctrl-alt-F1 and you will get to a text login. Login, and then become root by su, and then do init 3 to kill X completely. You can restart it by init 5 Also, if this does not help, you can use the command halt to shut it down properly - much healthier than hitting the reset button. |
Thanks Quatsch. I will try those commands and I'll wait for MDK9.2 but untill then I'm not sure if I should try MDK again or stick with RH9
