Having problems on getting my speakers in linux to work on my macintosh
 

So I would like to play music using my Macintosh speakers. Windows and Linux are both installed on my Macintosh.When I play music in Windows the speakers on my mac work, but when I try to play music in Linux (Ubunntu 10.10) I do not hear anything. I suspect the sound driver might not be compatible, but I am unsure. I know when I was installing the drivers from the bootcamp cd into windows; it took out windows audio driver called "realtek audio" and replaced it with "sigmatel audio" and/or "cirrus audio".

So if you can help me get my speakers to work that would be awesome! thanks!

P.S: Also windows and Linux are not being used in a virtual machine and are installed right on their own hard drive partitions.

Also the microphone does not work with linux either!

What kind of mac do you own ? Mine is an iMac 8,1 and the system profiler reports that I have an Intel High Definition Audio interface... I suppose such driver must exist for Ubuntu (I remember having seen such drivers on Intel's own website.

I own a MacBook Pro version 10.6.7 and I also have a Intel High Definition Audio Interface. In Ubuntu, under the sound settings it has "High Definition Audio Controller" and "Internal Audio." I tried both and they work with my head phones, but with my built in speakers in my mac and the built in microphone it does not work. Should I check out Intel's website to see if I can get a driver for Ubuntu?

I had realtek drivers when I was running XP (I have realtek ALC260), but dreamlinux picked mine up, and now terminal list me as having these modules for sound:

ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-intel snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm snd-timer snd-page-alloc snd-hwdep

First time I ran ALSA it picked up my sound as HDA-Intel,(I think cause it's built into the motherboard though) I dunno if that is any help at all though. Best of luck, sound is important.

actually I figure it out!! I went to the Ubuntu Software Centre and I downloaded the Alsa Mixer! Even though I went in terminal and open the alsa mixer to make sure all the volumes were turn up it still didn't work, but the grahical alsa mixer that i installed got my speakers to work! so i am glad i got this to work and thanks for all the help!
