having problems installing puppy linux on netbook.
 

hello I was trying to install puppy linux when I got the error message that puppy was not on the cd that was in the cdrom and says to mount the cdrom.The funny thing is the cdrom is mounted. So how do i go about fixing the problem i went to the documentation about installing puppy and couldnt find anything there about my problem. thanks in advance

Maybe this is not the best answer but I recommend you to install Xubuntu.

Set the netbook to boot from CD.
Reboot the netbook and see if puppy loads.

If I remember, puppy loads into memory and you can then remove the cd and continue. Also there should be a text or HTML doc on the desktop about installing to hard drive.

Please forgive me for suggesting this, but it's a mistake many of us have made once, in my case alas, more than once. When you burned the cd, did you remember to burn it as a bootable disk, so the .iso files were extracted?

i got the cd out of the magazine called linuxuser its popular in the uk.

yes it does copy to ram but my problem there is I cant find the files I need. I dont know where they put them.

Just curious, and I don't mean to imply that you haven't checked, but the CD, besides being in the CD drive, is also mounted ... yes? Because that's something you manually need to do (i.e. by using the Puppy mounting tool - or however else you choose).

If you happen to be at the stage of trying to make a bootable USB flash drive, and looking for one of the three files that it asks for, then look under /mnt (after having mounted the CD, if it isn't already). The three files are in the root directory of the CD.

[but all of that is based on trying to mind-read what you're doing :-) ... Ignore my ramblings if you're doing something completely different].

Try load puppy and eject the cd and push back in to see if it auto mounts

ok yes its mounted I took the cd out since its copied to the ram and i went to /mnt those three files arent there. What I did was went to install then clicked on universal installer then clicked on internal ide/sata hard drive then chose the drive to install to which of course there was only one and then clicked to install on sda1. Then the installer wants you to comfirm again so i click ok, then it gives me more info about how to install the files and asks where the files are CD OR DIRECTORY when i click on cd it says its not mounted but it is and when i go to directory none of the files are there unless im looking for the wrong file?

pmount is what is used in puppy linux to mount cd rom. Rox file manager is where files are located depending on puppy version.

Edit: just saw your post after I replied. Leave the cd inside cdrom drive during installation process, Don't remove it.

No, don't do that. Even though it's copied to RAM, put the CD back in again, then mount it again, and then look under whatever device it's called under /mnt, and you should see those three files. Click on any one of them (as it says) and you should be good to go. But the CD must be in the drive and mounted (at least that's what I found) - even though it's already loaded to RAM.

Also, I found better luck with creating the bootable USB by not choosing the default option ... I don't recall which option it was called, (but it starts with "M" something or other) ...

ok I put the cd back in mounted using the program it gives and still same error and I still cant find the files. I went to /mnt then sr0 and there was no file named vmlinuz,initrd.gz,and lupo_520.sfs.? the installer said that the lupo would be sometimes in the file initrd.gz and if it is the only one you have choose is the initrd.gz. so can I install to the hard drive a different way? like say usb flash drive?

ok I solved the problem the files werent under mnt/ exactly it was under initrd then go to mount/ then to tmpfs and there is lupo_520.sfs. at least thats how it worked on mine.

ok so it didnt work it supposedly installed but when i rebooted the computer there was an error about the ethernet controller and check cable.

ok sorry for all the edits I keep forgetting info, anyway I went to reinstall again and it says that I already have puppy on there so how do I get it to boot from my internal hard drive? thanks in advance

Not sure about the ethernet controller etc ... But did it actually boot up into Puppy, even though it gave those errors?

Sounds like you're making progress, but you could still check in on the Puppy forum I mentioned below ... The problem may well be something they are familiar with (if nobody on here is).

What I was explaining to you was what I did, when I put Puppy onto a USB flash drive, so I could have the entire thing boot from USB. I guessed that's what you were trying to do, but sounds like you want to actually install Puppy on your hard drive.

The process is pretty similar I suppose, using the Universal Installer program, and the three files are the same ones I needed to find in order to do the flash drive. I don't know where else to suggest they are ... they kind of almost have to be there on the CD some place, and I could see them right away as soon I mounted the CD and checked in /mnt/sr0 (or whatever device name it was).

Yes, you should be able to install to USB and then to hard drive. (in fact I just checked on my USB system to see if I could do that, and it certainly seems like you could do.) However, to get it onto your hard drive from a bootable USB you still need to find those same files that you can't find right now.

Maybe they configured that free CD differently somehow, but if you download the Puppy ISO directly from the Puppy site, and burn a CD with it, then I really don't think you'll have any problems. I thought it would be one of those things where I was tearing my hair out, but it really was quite easy. Download the ISO; burn it as an image to CD; boot from the CD, and you're good to go. Mount the CD, and then use the Universal Installer program ...(and find one of those three files).

If you really can't make any progress, then you might get other assistance at one of the Puppy forums (try http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/).

Sorry I can't be of more help, but once you find those files it's pretty straight-forward.
